OVERVIEW
At Alma Primary School we strongly believe that every child can enjoy and succeed in mathematics when they are given the appropriate learning opportunities. This enables pupils of all abilities to develop resilience and confidence and make progress according to the National Curriculum.
EYFS and KS1
‘Maths Mastery’ is the scheme of work used in our Early Years and KS1 classes. It is based on the approach to teaching Maths used in Shanghai and Singapore. They have a consistent, tried and tested approach to mathematics teaching which has inspired the programme.
‘Singapore-style teaching helps solve problem of maths failure, says new research’
The Independent 2017
KS2
Currently in Yrs. 3,4,5 and 6 we use the Mathematics Enhancement Programme, Primary Project (MEP Primary), has been developed by the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching (CIMT) at Plymouth University to enhance the mathematical progress of students in primary schools. ‘The MEP is a friendly and non-confrontational style of learning that encourages classes to engage in pupil-led discussions to find solutions to maths problems….’ The Guardian 2012
Our ultimate aim is to enable our pupils to solve maths problems in unfamiliar contexts by using:
  • Objects, pictures, numbers and symbols enable pupils to represent ideas and make connections in different ways. This develops understanding and problem solving skills – while making lessons engaging and fun.
  • Visualisation and manipulatives, relating contexts to students' experiences where possible.
  • Demonstrating and modelling to help understanding.
  • Spiral curriculum with continual revision; learning by heart encouraged, with progression in small, logical steps.
  • Mathematical language to strengthen conceptual understanding and enabling pupils to explain and justify their answers.
